Health - ACA & Carrier Direct Enrollments

What exactly is an ACA Health Insurance Plan?

We can assist with finding the right individual and family health plans to meet your needs. Whether that be enrollment through the federal marketplace or directly with an insurance company.

Affordable Care Act (ACA) plans—often called "Marketplace" or "Obamacare" —are comprehensive health insurance policies designed for individuals, families, and self-employed professionals who do not have access to coverage through an employer. Unlike carrier direct, ACA enrollments may qualify for additional monthly financial assistance.

ACA plans are fully compliant with federal regulations and guarantees coverage for mandated Essential Health Benefits, such as:

  • Preventive Care

  • Prescription Drugs

  • Maternity & Newborn Care

  • Mental Health Services

  • Emergency & Hospitalization

  • Pre-Existing Conditions

When Can You Enroll?

Annual Open Enrollment Period (OEP)

Currently the primary window to sign up for, or change your ACA health plan generally runs from November 1 through December 15 each year, but could be longer depending on your state.

  • Enroll by December 15 for coverage starting January 1.

Understanding the Metal Tiers

ACA plans are categorized into "metal" tiers to help you easily balance your monthly premium against your out-of-pocket costs:

  • Gold: Higher monthly premiums, but the lowest costs when you see a doctor. Best if you require regular medical care or prescriptions.

  • Silver: Moderate premiums and moderate out-of-pocket costs. Bonus: This is the only tier eligible for extra "Cost-Sharing Reductions" to lower your deductibles.

  • Bronze: The lowest monthly premiums, but higher deductibles and copays when you seek care. Ideal for healthy individuals wanting safety-net coverage.

Special Enrollment Period (SEP)

Outside of Open Enrollment, you may be able to enroll if you have experienced a qualifying life event within the last 60 days. Common events include:

  • Losing job-based health insurance or Medicaid

  • Moving to a new county or state

  • Getting married, divorced, or having a baby
